<div itemprop="description">Howell, Doris Isabelle, age 98, of Amherst and formerly of Dartmouth passed away on Saturday, September 3rd. at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst, N.S. Born in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, April 1, 1918, she was the eldest daughter of Joseph and Gertrude Robson. <br> <br>Doris started her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Leamington, N.S. and continued to teach in schools across Canada, as the Navy took her family to various locations. Doris’ love of books led her to one of her favorite places of employment – the Dartmouth Library (Alderney Gate Public Library). <br> <br>Doris believed the Haans Christian Anderson motto, “To travel is to live.” She visited many regions across North America, Europe and Australia. <br> <br>In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, reading, completing the daily crossword puzzle, working on jigsaw puzzles and knitting. Doris spent years of volunteering for the Red Cross. In her later years, Doris learned of Teddies for Tragedy, an organization that provides teddies to children who endure a traumatic event, and she knit just over 1000 teddies. <br> <br>Doris is survived by her son, Bob (Pat), Amherst; grandson, James (Nath), Toronto; granddaughter, Kim (Jeff) Gleason, great-granddaughters Charlotte and Josie, Winthrop, Maine. She is also survived by her three nieces and other extended family in British Columbia and Washington State. <br> <br>In addition to her parents, Doris was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Cliff, and her two sisters Jean and Velma. <br> <br>There will be no visitation or funeral as per her wishes.
