<div itemprop="description">Howard Robie Furlong, 85 years of age, of Amherst passed Sunday, September 27, 2015 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre following a lengthy illness. Born in Amherst he was a son of the late Robie and Beulah (Read) Furlong. He is survived by five sons: Allison (Shirley) of Moncton, NB, Ronald &amp; Marty (Katrina) of Amherst, David (Rosemary) of Central Rawdon and James (Gloria) of Denver, CO.; 11 grandchildren, several great grandchildren; a sister Margaret (Richard Trites) of Sackville and a companion Muriel Steele. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife the former Katherine Estabrooks and brothers Thomas and Rodger.<br /><br />Howard spent his working life assisting the citizens of Amherst and area, with his father and sons, with the family business, Furlong's Funeral Home. He was a former member of the Knights of Pythias, Masonic Lodge, Lions Club, Fly-a-ways camping club, Nova Scotia Licensed Embalmers &amp; Funeral Directors Assoc., Cumberland North Liberal Assoc. and was a former MLA candidate.<br /><br />His remains are resting at Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (902-667-9906) with visiting hours on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Trinity St. Stephens United Church, Amherst on Thursday, October 1, 2015 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Nigel Weaver officiating. Burial will be in the Amherst Cemetery followed by a reception in Burgess Hall at the church.<br /><br />Memorial donations may be made to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre Palliative Care, Cumberland V. O.
