<div itemprop="description">The death of Joseph William O&rsquo;Byrne age 90 of Amherst occurred peacefully on January 31, 2013 at Gables Lodge in Amherst. <br /> Joe was born in Toronto, ON, on September 5, 1922 to the late Leo and Isabel (Russell) O&rsquo;Byrne. <br /> He moved to Amherst with his family in 1929. A lifelong Roman Catholic, Joe was a faithful member of Holy Family Parish in Amherst. <br /> Joe was educated at St. Charles and West Highland schools, leaving at the age of 16 to go to work. After 27 years in the workforce, he went back to school to earn his high school diploma. <br /> On July 27, 1942 he married his best friend, the former Eva Betts. They have had 70 years together. <br /> Joe was a 46 year member of the Amherst volunteer fire department and was a member of the committee to build our present fire station. He retired at the age of 65 as Captain of No.3 hose Co. <br /> Joe was the first president of the Cumberland County Firefighter Association. He was past president of the Canadian Bible Association. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Joe was a 35 year member of Amherst and Sackville A.A. and was an inspiration to many new comers joining the group. <br /> He is survived by his wife Eva and sons Joe Jr. (Linda), Brian, Frank (Jackie), Glenn (Carol Ann), and daughter Ann (Michael) Stewart. <br /> He was the proud Grandpa, Papa or Big Dad to 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and &ldquo;Adopted Granddad&rdquo; to Bill (Phyllis) Mill&rsquo;s 7 children and 2 grandchildren. <br /> He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Howard, Leo and great granddaughter Emily Rose Dale. <br /> His remains are resting in Campbell&rsquo;s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906) with visiting on Sunday February, 3, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with parish prayers at 8:30 p.m. <br /> Funeral service will be celebrated from Holy Family Roman Catholic Church on Monday, February 4, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Father Vernon Driscoll officiating. Reception will follow in the parish hall. Interment will take place in the spring in the St. Charles-Nativity Cemetery. <br /> Memorial donations in Joseph&rsquo;s memory may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul. <br /> Online condolences and sharing of memories via: www.campbellsamherst.ca <br /> </div>
