She attended Cumberland County Academy and graduated from St. Charles Commercial School. She joined the staff of The Smith Studio which is where she met Ron. They were married in June 1939, and after raising their daughters she returned to work at Amherst Travel Service. She was always interested in the affairs of her town, and took part in her church and her community. When interviewed after her 103rd birthday, K. said “I just kept going. I loved to do what I was doing.”

In the 1950's, K. was instrumental in rejuvenating the Girl Guide movement in Amherst. She became Brown Owl of the 1st Amherst Brownie Pack and was honoured to welcome Olave, Lady Baden Powell to Amherst. Until recently some of her original Brownies would welcome her with “Hello, Brown Owl!” On her 71st birthday, K. became a charter member of the Amherst Trefoil Guild, and a life member of the Amherst Guiding movement. For all of her guiding work, she received the Girl Guide Long Service Certificate and the Thank You Pin. She received her 65-year service pin for her continuous commitment to the Girl Guides of Canada.

After holding many positions in her IODE Chapter, K. became a life member of Lord Amherst Chapter IODE. She loved knitting, crocheting, cooking, bird watching, writing stories, playing cards, and travelling. She continued to play bridge past her 100th birthday. She loved hosting family get togethers and dinners, especially at New Year’s, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. K. loved spending the summer at her cottage, Sundeck, at Oxley Beach, Tidnish, and encouraged others to partake of the curative power of the sea air at the shore. In the 1970s, K. would gather all the children at Oxley Beach for a flag raising ceremony on July 1st. The youngest attendee raised the flag while everyone young and old sang “O Canada”. Passing on a sense of patriotism and noble citizenship to the next generation was a lifelong passion of K.’s.

A special thank you to Dr. Krzysztof Bienkowski for his great care of and compassion to K. over the years.
