<div itemprop="description">Maria B. (Piet) Van Schaayk, age 90, of Amherst passed away on Thursday, July 30th, 2015 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Center, Upper Nappan, N.S. She was born in Didam, the Netherlands to the late Bernard Wolsing and the late Maria Heinst. Piet was the dedicated wife of Harry and mother of two sons, Bart, of Calgary, Alberta and Frank (Linda MacQueen) of Hinsdale, Illinois. Piet was also the very proud and loving &ldquo;Oma&rdquo; of Ben and Maggie, children of Frank and Linda. She is also survived one sister Theet, and numerous nieces and nephews also in the The Netherlands. She was predeceased by her husband Harry in 2004, brothers Geert and Ben and sisters Ans, Leny and Trees, all of whom were from the Netherlands. <br /> <br />Piet immigrated with Harry to Canada, via Pier 21 in Halifax, in 1953. Piet, Harry and infant son Bart settled in Amherst. Frank was born shortly afterwards. Harry established a career as a machinist and later worked with the Correction Services of Canada and Piet stayed at home to raise their two boys. Together they built a wonderful life in Canada. Piet was always at Harry&rsquo;s side and was active in her in own right working at the Highland View Hospital shop as well as it&rsquo;s baby clinic, knitting baby sweaters for many new mothers in town and baking fruit cakes for her friends. She spoke often of her gratitude for the country of Canada, its role in the liberation of The Netherlands in 1945, which she witnessed first-hand as a young lady. Throughout her life she maintained a great sense of humor and always loved to tell stories. <br /> <br />Visitation will be held at Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (667-9906) on Sunday, August 9th from 2-4 p.m., with parish prayers at 3:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Monday, August 10th at 10:00 a.m. from Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Amherst with Father Vernon Driscoll officiating. Interment will take place in the St. Charles - Nativity Cemetery, Amherst.
